Field Journal policies

Terms of Use

Last updated October 29, 2026

This is a plain-language draft. It hasn't been reviewed by a lawyer yet and may change. It doesn't claim that Field Journal meets any particular law.

The ground rules for using Field Journal, kept as short and plain as we could.

  1. 1.Who we are

Field Journal is a writing community about the natural world. It's Field Journal, run by Ryan Mountain. You can reach us at myfieldjournalcommunity@gmail.com.

  2. 2.Using Field Journal

Anyone can browse Field Journal and read the opening of every piece. With a free account you can read whole pieces, write, respond, save and send Letters. By using the site you agree to these terms and to the community guidelines.

You need to be old enough to agree to terms like these where you live. If you're younger than that, please only use Field Journal with a parent or guardian's permission.

  3. 3.Your account

One person per account. Keep your password to yourself; you're responsible for what happens on your account. Don't pretend to be someone else. If you think someone else is using your account, change your password and tell us.

  4. 4.Your writing and photos

You own what you post, and you give Field Journal a limited permission to show it. You're responsible for what you post, and you must have the right to share it. The details are on Contributor Rights & Copyright.

  5. 5.Selling and bookings

You're welcome to mention and promote your own work. Physical products, guiding and outfitting trips aren't sold or booked through Field Journal. Shops on The Trading Post sell on their own websites and follow the Shopkeeper terms.

  6. 6.Supporting Field Journal

Cabin Keeper support, tips and Journal Sponsor payments help pay for running the site. They aren't charitable donations, and no tax receipts are given. Card payments are handled by our payment provider; Field Journal never sees your card number. Monthly support can be cancelled at any time and keeps going until the end of the month you've paid for.

  7. 7.Keeping the camp friendly

Field Journal can hold, hide or remove anything that breaks the community guidelines, and pause or close accounts that keep breaking them. Some words automatically hold a piece for a look, and a piece reported by several people is hidden until it's checked. When we can, we'll tell you what happened and why.

  8. 8.Stories aren't professional advice

Pieces on Field Journal are personal experience and opinion. Before you act on anything you read here, such as foraging, recipes, firearms, ice, water or weather, check the local rules, regulations and safety advice.

  9. 9.Links to other websites

Pieces, sponsor notes and shop pages may link to other websites. Those sites have their own terms and privacy rules, and Field Journal doesn't control them.

  10. 10.Leaving

You can delete your account at any time from your Biography. That removes your pieces, responses, Letters and photos (see Privacy Policy for what stays in backups for a short time).

  11. 11.Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Field Journal grows. The date at the top shows the last change. We'll mention bigger changes on the site before they apply.
