Get Involved
Pull up a chair
Field Journal is just getting started, and there are a few ways to be part of it. Reading and writing start free. Sponsors pay for a small note, and conservation groups are listed for free. Businesses and organizations fill in their own details, and nothing of theirs shows on the site until it's been approved.
Writers
Write with us
Anyone can write here. Make a free account, open Field Notes, and publish when your piece is ready. Your first month includes everything High Country has; after that you're on Trailhead, which stays free and has its own word and picture limits.
Businesses
Sponsor a note
A clearly labelled note with your name, one line, a short description, an optional picture and a link. Pick up to four topics and you'll show first on stories about them. No pop-ups, nothing that moves, and nothing in the middle of a story. Every sponsor is chosen by hand and must fit the outdoors.
Who sees it
- — Signed-out visitors and Trailhead readers: the larger card, with your picture and description, after every story and once on Camp.
- — Backcountry readers: the larger card after every third story.
- — High Country and Outfitter's Post readers: a small note after every fifth story.
- — Never on Outfitter's Post members' own pieces, or on paid pieces once those open.
Prices (Canadian dollars)
- — Regular price: $40 a month
- — Outfitter's Post members: $20 a month (50% off). Outfitter's Post isn't open yet.
Fill in your own note and choose how long it runs. Field Journal reviews every sign-up, and you pay Field Journal directly once it's approved; the site itself takes no payments. Sponsors get no say over the writing.
Sign in or create a free account to sign up as a sponsor. You'll fill in your own banner and choose how long it runs.
Organizations
List your conservation group
Groups looking after fish, wildlife, rivers and wild places can sign up to appear on Give Back to Nature. Listing is free, donations go straight to your own donation page, and Field Journal talks with each group before approving it.
Partners
Sponsored collections
Outdoor businesses, responsible brands and conservation groups can ask about sponsoring a curated collection of writing on a theme. None are running yet; tell us what you have in mind. Themes might include:
Rivers · Forests · Wildlife · Public lands · Outdoor culture · Responsible fishing · Field notes · Conservation
Any sponsored collection would be clearly labelled, and sponsors wouldn't choose, edit or approve the writing.
Learning
Outdoor and nature writing workshops
We're thinking about running writing workshops. None are scheduled yet, and nothing is for sale. Topics might include:
- — Nature and environmental writing
- — Outdoor storytelling
- — Field journaling
- — Natural history writing
- — Writing about ecology and conservation
- — Turning outdoor experiences into essays
Readers
Support Field Journal early
Paid passes (Backcountry at $5 a month, High Country at $10 a month) will open once the site has grown. Nobody is charged anything today. If you'd like to support Field Journal when they open, let us know. These are extras we're considering, with nothing promised yet:
- — Online events and discussions
- — Writer Q&As
- — Curated reading lists
- — Special editorial collections
- — Early access to selected events or writing
